Track and trace is the process of monitoring a shipment’s location and status through its lifecycle, recording milestones with evidence, and managing exceptions against the service promise (appointment, ETA, window).
The customer asks at 4:10 p.m. where the trailer is. The coordinator opens five chats, calls the driver, waits for a GPS screenshot from the carrier… and replies at 5:05. By then, the unload appointment is already lost.
That is reactive track & trace. Proactive does not wait for the question: it defines milestones, compares against the promise, and fires an alert when the ETA breaks. What track and trace means in transportation
Track is knowing where the unit is and which process state it is in (assigned, loading, in transit, unloading, delivered). Trace is reconstructing the history with evidence: timestamps, geofences, POD, incidents.
