Load density is the weight you move per kilometer traveled: kilograms transported ÷ kilometers traveled (= kg/km). On Mexico–U.S. distribution it is a utilization signal for FTL and LTL — how much freight “earns” the distance — not a substitute for drop size, km per delivery, or On Time In Full (OTIF).

What load density (kg/km) is

In Mexican operations, load density answers: how many kilograms “fit” into each kilometer you already ran? It is a key performance indicator (KPI) for network utilization — useful when you compare full truckload (FTL), less-than-truckload (LTL), or when you suspect you are paying distance without weight.

It does not measure whether the truck hit the appointment, or how much you left at each dock. It also does not replace logistics cost in pesos: a high kg/km with uncontrolled diesel and detention can still destroy margin.

Service context (not density): the 4th National Logistics Indicators Study 2026 (#SoyLogístico / LDM / EGADE) reports customer delivery fill rate near ~93% in its sample. Use it to calibrate fill expectations — not to invent a “world-class kg/km.”

Formula, units, and period

Freeze numerator, denominator, and window before you publish the number. If you mix estimated weight with incomplete GPS, kg/km becomes theater.

FTL vs LTL vs capillary: what density means

The same kg/km reads differently by mode. In FTL you fill equipment and minimize empty miles. In LTL you watch consolidation. In capillary (many small stops), a “low” density is often the price of covering the map — not an automatic yard failure.

FTL (full truckload)

What high kg/km usually means: Good weight/cube fill on the loaded leg

What low kg/km usually means: Half-empty equipment or many empty km in the cycle

Worth noting: empty miles and capillary coverage lower density even when outbound loading looked “fine.”

Empty miles: how they destroy density

Empty miles are kilometers you pay without generating loaded revenue. In the density formula they act as quiet poison: the denominator grows and the numerator does not.

  • Full outbound + empty return: the full cycle dilutes kg/km versus measuring only the loaded leg — declare which one you report.
  • Repositioning and false freight: “ready position” km also count if you include them in the universe.
  • Comparing carriers: loaded-leg-only vs full-cycle reporters are not comparable.

If density falls month over month with the same shipped weight, audit empty miles and sequencing before blaming the spot rate.

How to read it in Mexico and by lane

On lanes such as Monterrey–Laredo, Bajío–border, or hinterland to Manzanillo, the national average hides the corridor that breaks you. Measure density by lane and by customer, not only the network roll-up.

Money link: low density with high distribution costs usually signals small stops, empty miles, or poor sequencing. High density with broken OTIF signals you optimized weight/km and forgot the appointment. National Study 2026 gives service context (fill rate ~93% sample); it does not publish an official kg/km benchmark — do not invent one.
