A logistics key performance indicator (KPI) is a measurable metric of chain performance — service, cost, productivity, or compliance — with a clear formula, data source, and owner who acts when it goes out of range. If nobody can say what the number decides on Monday, it is not a metric: it is decoration.
This page defines what makes a KPI valid. The flagship distribution board (unit-correct formulas, OTIF vs OTD vs fill rate, cash, and volatility) lives in distribution KPIs — logistics Mexico.

What a logistics KPI is (usable answer)
A KPI is not “any chart”: it is an operating question with numerator, denominator, and period. Example: OTIF = on-time complete deliveries ÷ total deliveries in the period. Without a tie to the trip or order, the board fights a shadow spreadsheet and nobody trusts month-end.
On Mexico–U.S. lanes the same trip mixes appointment, GPS, electronic invoice (CFDI), Carta Porte, and proof of delivery (POD). A service KPI without those inputs cannot release payment or renegotiate a carrier.
What a KPI is not (dashboard theater)
The gold bar fails if the board celebrates “99% world-class” with no unit, no service-level agreement (SLA), and no owner. It also fails if there are twenty metrics “because the vendor ships them” and nobody decides.

Why it matters by role
Each role watches a different KPI. If the board is theater, meetings drag and money leaks through exceptions.
| Role | KPI they usually watch | If the KPI is theater |
|---|---|---|
| Leadership | OTIF and cost per order | Meetings with no action |
| Traffic / operations | Exceptions and punctuality | Firefighting with no trend |
| Accounts payable | Freight leakage / pay cycle | Pays with no learning |
| Warehouse | Fill rate and productivity | Goals that do not match appointments |

From concept to the distribution board
Here you learn what a KPI is. For the operable Mexico–U.S. distribution board (service, cost, control, and cash; drop size; km per delivery; volatility; pre-pay), go to the flagship:
Distribution KPIs — logistics Mexico.
Market context: the 4th National Logistics Indicators Study 2026 (#SoyLogístico / LDM / EGADE) reports customer-delivery fill rate ~93% average in its sample — useful as a compass, not a blind target. Calibrate to your SLA.
OCL and the trip file
OCL Cargo is an autonomous transportation management system (TMS) with agents: it feeds metrics with trip milestones and evidence so OTIF, cost, and exceptions are defensible. It does not replace your review culture or invent the leadership board. When applicable, it can stamp invoices and Carta Porte; it also audits the trip file.
Key takeaways6 points
- A logistics KPI = a metric with formula, source, and owner, used to decide (service, cost, productivity, or compliance).
- More than 10 KPIs with no decision is theater: prioritize OTIF, logistics cost, and time-to-exception.
- Every metric needs a TMS or WMS source and a named-owner review.
- If the number does not change quoting, assignment, payment, or escalation, cut it.
- This page defines the concept; the operable distribution board lives in the KPI hub.
- OCL feeds KPIs with trip evidence. It does not invent your board. It can stamp invoices and Carta Porte.

A key performance indicator (KPI) with formula, data source, and owner that measures service, cost, productivity, or compliance to drive decisions — not a decorative number in a meeting.
The minimum that change a decision (often 4–7). More than 10 without owners is usually theater. The flagship distribution board is in distribution KPIs.
Operating metrics: daily or weekly. Strategic: monthly, with the same formula. Changing the formula every month destroys comparability.
Same window definition, same source in the transportation management system (TMS) or warehouse management system (WMS), and evidence in the trip file (POD, timestamps).
It feeds metrics with trip milestones and documents so the KPI does not depend on screenshots. It can stamp invoices and Carta Porte; it does not invent your leadership board.
