Lead time is the total time from when an order (or a process) is triggered until the goods arrive at the agreed point. In Mexico–US logistics it often mixes procurement, warehouse, and freight; the expensive mistake is promising a “total” number without knowing which stage the clock is in.

What is lead time (operable definition)

In operations, lead time answers: from the event that starts the cycle (customer order, purchase order to supplier, wave release) to the agreed delivery event, how much time passed? It is a key performance indicator (KPI) of duration and predictability — not a synonym for “service”.

How to calculate it without self-deception

A “4-day” lead time without milestones is marketing. You need timestamps on the same object (order or trip) and a written exclusion rule (force majeure, customer dock closed with a ticket).

Report median and 90th percentile, not only the average: one border outlier distorts the month. Cross with OTD (on-time delivery) to see whether the delay is promised duration or a missed window.

Where it breaks on Mexico–US

On the corridor, freight lead time rarely breaks only on “tractor speed”. It breaks on unrealistic appointments, dock saturation, crossing/customs, and hand-captured status. Kearney (State of Logistics Mexico, recent update) flags corridor and crossing congestion — with waits of hours and, at peaks, days — as a competitiveness drag; use it as context, not as your plant target.
