Operator using a digital YMS yard system in a trailer lot

Definition

A YMS (Yard Management System) controls locations, statuses, and movements of trailers in the yard, connecting physical equipment reality to the dock (WMS) and the linehaul trip (TMS).

Buying a YMS without yard rules digitizes the supervisor’s radio.

Related: logistics yard · WMS · TMS.

What it means in practice

A YMS answers: which trailer is in which slot, since when, for which appointment, and who moves it? Without those answers, drop and hook and detention are anecdotes.

The typical failure is implementing it without TMS appointment ties: then you have a map… and the same WhatsApp as before.

How to adopt a YMS in 5 steps

Map the yard

Zones/slots
YMS without integration = a map without decisions.

Expensive mistakes

1.YMS without TMS

Trip and yard do not talk.

2.Ignoring empty dwell

The map fills with dead trailers.

3.Data only at shift close

Exceptions arrive too late for OTIF.

4.Over-customizing screens

Nobody uses it at the gate.

OCL and the trip file

OCL can consume YMS events (in, move, out) to build the trip file and audit detention. It is not a YMS or a PAC.

Key takeaways5 points
  1. YMS (Yard Management System) = system that controls trailer locations and moves in the yard, bridging WMS (dock) and TMS (linehaul trip).
  2. It is not a WMS or TMS: if you use it as a pretty slot spreadsheet, you keep the chaos with better fonts.
  3. In Mexico the value appears when drop/hook, appointments, and dwell share an ID with the trip.
  4. Integrate gate, jockey, and doors; measure dwell and sequence, not only occupied/free.
  5. OCL coexistence: consumes YMS events for the trip file; does not replace the YMS. OCL can stamp invoices and Carta Porte.
